UK Weather: Storm Bram brings 90mph winds and likely travel problems
Strong winds and heavy rain from Storm Bram are expected to cause problems across parts of the UK. Sky News weather expert Dr Christopher England said many places could be affected by “damaging gusts”. He added that even one fallen tree could cause major issues.
The Met Office has issued “danger to life” warnings for Scotland, Wales, and southwest England. Bad weather is expected today and into tomorrow morning. Chief forecaster Dan Suri said Storm Bram will bring “very strong winds and more heavy rain”.
Worst weather in northwest Scotland
Northwest Scotland is expected to see the strongest winds, with an amber warning in place. Gusts could reach more than 90mph.
Dr England repeated that dangerous gusts may cause disruption.
Travel and property risks
The storm could cause damage to buildings, flooding, travel delays, and power cuts. People in the amber warning areas — mainly the Highlands and Eilean Siar — are advised to secure loose items around their homes to avoid injury.
Travel problems are likely. Roads, bridges, and train lines may close. Buses, trains, ferries, and flights could be delayed or cancelled. Transport Scotland and Network Rail are asking people to check travel updates before leaving home.
The Met Office says the amber wind warning will be in effect from 4pm to midnight.
Up to 100mm of rain expected
An amber rain warning is in place for parts of South Wales and southwest England. It started overnight and will continue until 10am.
In the South West, the warning mainly affects the Dartmoor area in Devon.
The Met Office says most places in the warning zone will get 50 to 75mm of rain, and some areas could see up to 100mm.
This heavy rain will fall on ground that is already very wet, which could cause difficult travel conditions.
There are also two yellow wind warnings for today.
One warning covers Scotland’s Grampians, Highlands, Eilean Siar, Orkney Islands, and Strathclyde until midday.
The other warning ended at 6am. It covered parts of the Grampians, northwest and northeast England, and the Denbighshire and Flintshire areas of Wales.
The storm has been named Storm Bram by the Irish weather service, Met Éireann.
