UK Will Be an ‘AI Superpower,’ Says Nvidia Boss After £500m Investment
Jensen Huang, the co-founder and CEO of US chipmaker Nvidia, said the UK is set to become an “AI superpower” as he announced a £500m investment in a British cloud computing company called NScale.
Huang, who will attend a state banquet with Donald Trump and the king on Wednesday, said he is taking an ownership stake in NScale. He predicted the company could earn up to £50bn in the next six years.
At a press conference in London, Huang praised the UK’s universities and tech companies, such as AI leader DeepMind and driverless car startup Wayve. “You don’t realise how good you are. Your universities are amazing. You’re too humble,” he said.
His comments come as China bans its top AI companies from buying Nvidia chips, highlighting the global struggle for AI dominance. Huang said he was “disappointed” by the reports and added: “It’s safer for the world if China and the US work together in AI, instead of cutting ties.”
Nvidia is also selling 120,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to the UK as part of a much bigger £11bn investment. About 70% of the money will go into computing and networking, while the rest will cover land, energy, and data centre infrastructure. This move, Huang said, would give the UK 100 times the power of its fastest current supercomputer, the Isambard AI system in Bristol.
Huang also spoke about the ongoing debate over how AI uses artists’ work. Many musicians, including Elton John and Mick Jagger, have complained that their copyrighted material is being used to train AI systems without permission. Huang agreed that “artists should be able to earn money from their creations” and said new ways must be found to ensure this happens.
Huang spoke positively about Britain’s future as a leader in AI, but warned that the country still faces a big challenge: finding enough electricity to run the many new data centers that need huge amounts of power. He said nuclear energy and gas power plants will be important.
He also encouraged the UK to build its own AI systems, even though companies like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI from the US are investing heavily in the country.
“Every country should build its own AI,” he said. “The UK will need to do the same. The data comes from your people and your companies. It belongs to you, and you should be able to use it for your country’s benefit.”
