María Zardoya: Natural Beauty with a Touch of Edge
María Zardoya, the lead singer of the band The Marías, believes in keeping things real. She wants people to know that who they see on stage is the same person they would meet in everyday life. “There’s not much difference between performance María and regular María,” she explains during a Zoom call. For her, beauty is simple. A little lip gloss, a soft blush on her cheeks, and her favorite—smudged eyeliner—are all she needs. “I use the same makeup whether I’m performing or not,” she says. “I just try to keep it natural, fresh, and sometimes a bit grungy.”
Her beauty style has stayed true for years, and much of it is inspired by YSL Beauty. María’s love for the brand began back in high school when she visited her brother and sister-in-law in New York. “They always had the nicest things,” she remembers. “When I stayed in their Manhattan apartment, I felt so chic and grown-up. My sister-in-law would let me use her makeup. She had this gold wand that was both a highlighter and concealer. It felt like magic.” That product, of course, was YSL’s famous Touche Éclat.
Even now, María still uses that iconic product, along with some of YSL’s newer releases like the Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick and Make Me Blush. Her long-time love for the brand recently led her to become a YSL Maker, an official partner and face of the Parisian beauty house. For María, the brand’s mix of elegance and edge fits perfectly with her personality and her artistry.

Instead, she lets her real self shine through. “I’m always trying to find a balance between being authentic and open with my fans, while also keeping a part of myself private,” she says thoughtfully. “Sometimes I worry that if I share too much, I’ll feel judged. I’m not playing a role or a character. This is me. But I also need to protect a little piece of who I am.”
That balance is something María continues to explore, both in her personal life and in her career. Her approach to beauty mirrors her approach to music: simple, natural, but never boring. A bit of edge—whether it’s eyeliner that looks perfectly smudged or lyrics that feel deeply personal—adds that extra touch that makes her stand out.
