Energy firms complete UK’s first hydrogen blending trial

Energy companies have successfully carried out the UK’s first test of mixing green hydrogen with natural gas to make electricity — a major step in the country’s move toward cleaner energy.

For the first time, a 2% mix of green hydrogen was added to the gas supply and used to power the Brigg power station in North Lincolnshire. The plant then produced electricity for the national grid.

Until now, hydrogen blending had only been tested in controlled lab environments using old gas pipes. This new real-world test was run by Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, and National Gas, which manages the UK’s gas transmission system.

The successful trial shows hydrogen’s potential to reduce carbon emissions, especially in industries that are difficult to decarbonise. Hydrogen produces no carbon dioxide when burned, making it a cleaner energy option.

Green hydrogen is made by splitting water with renewable electricity, creating a fuel with very low emissions. However, experts still debate its efficiency compared to electric-powered heat pumps.

Gary Smith, general secretary of the GMB union, said the trial marks “a significant moment for our country’s energy future.” He added that such innovation can bring skilled jobs to industrial areas and help the UK reach its net-zero goals.

Centrica and National Gas are now asking the government to support hydrogen blends of up to 5% in the national gas system.

Jon Butterworth, CEO of National Gas, called the trial “a crucial milestone on Britain’s hydrogen journey.” He said blending hydrogen could power power stations, attract new investments, and make use of existing gas pipes to build a cleaner energy future for the UK.
